Show THE DISLOYALTT CRT. Some thirty odd years ago the United Stated government was tricked and deceived Into ordering an expedition for the alleged suppression sup-pression of disloyalty, the record of which has ever since formed one of the most humiliating pages in our national history. The enterprise was enormously expensive, and sub sequent disclosures proved it tobave bccnso utterly ncedlcsvthat tbo administration which ordered It has ever since been censured for Uie unmitigated un-mitigated folly of the act. We refer to the Utah expedition under tbe command of General Albert Sidney Johnston, which reached this valley in IE5S. A charge of disloyalty falsely and recklessly made against tbe inhabitants inhab-itants of tho Territory, was tbe cause of the sending hither, on a wild gooso chase, of Johnston's army. Bad there first been an investigation in-vestigation of the facts, and a sensible conclusion reached reflecting reflect-ing them, tbo Buchanan administration administra-tion would have been saved the disgrace, and tbo government the expense, which that aflalr caused. The "Mormons" were completely exonerated from tbe charge which bad been preferred against them. Again, about four years ago, the Bame cry was raised, coupled with tho declaration that there was danger of a "Mormon" uprising in this city. As a result, troops were quartered in it. The ludicrous falsity ot the pretene ou which they were pLiced here, caused tho commanding officers who ordered, the move to be regarded as the victims of another anti-"Mor-mon" hoax. The imperturbable manner in which the "Mormons" have attended to their own business during tho continuance of the state of affairs existing here for the last fire or six years, is ampla proof of their respect for law and order, aad the cronndlcssness of what bas been said of thuu to the contrary. At numerous other times thau those hero mentioned .has tbe same charge of lack of fidelity to the government gov-ernment been, mctaud disproved. Recently Uio disloyalty cry bas been raised again with greater vehemence ve-hemence than ever. The object of vociferating it Just at this time, has heretofore been amply set forth in tbtso column. There is a probability that national party lines will Boon lw drawn in Utah, in which event the "Mormons" would be in a position to designate who shojld go to Congress, and who should fill tbe local elective ofticcs. This is the key to the movement move-ment w hich is now seeking culmin ation in tbe passage by Congressofa disfranchisement bill, in support of which so much is Just now being reiterated about the disloyalty of the "Mormon" people. The government having been led into gra'o errors on previous occa-lons occa-lons by a delusive outcry against tho "Mormons,'' common prudence ought to suggest an investigation of existing conditions In this Territory, Terri-tory, by or under tho auspices of Congress, before any such a measure as the Struble bill "shall be sent lo the President for his approval. appro-val. Tlie passage of that bill on the strength of tho misrepresentations of Utah aCairs, which has won to it what support it lias among Congressmen) Con-gressmen) rrould be a mistake more expensive, disastrous and humillat-lug humillat-lug thin was tlie Johnston's army episode, or almost any other move ever made by cither tho legislative, executive or judicial department of the governments Wcro thb investigation above suggested sug-gested to l faithfully made, and Its results Ciirly reported, it would be show ii to tho world that there exists in Utah a nest of conspirators orthy of the companionhipof Guy Fawkes himself, who, , In order to accomplish such pel tonal ends as those of ambition, and the gratification gratifica-tion of hatred, would destroy not only the building in which Congress Con-gress sits, with the members of that body, but the fabric of our glorious glori-ous government itef. The further fact wouU be disclosed that not upon any act, utterance, sentiment, doctrine or anticipation of the "Mormon" people has the charge of disloyalty against them Its real foundation; but that tho accusation Is based upon the hope entertained by the men who make it, that by pressing it they will be able to carry to fruition their foul schemes. |
