Show Carpenters Again. From Mr. F. R. Poll, the superintendent superin-tendent of the Tenth Ward Lumber and Building Association, a new firm opened in the east side of tow n, we learn a few of his men went out ou strike today. He says they are mostly transients and the ones who are causing all the trouble. The association of which ho Is superintendent superin-tendent does not otject to laying lay-ing good men the prices asked, but docs object to toying a poor hand a price that lie cannot earn. Mr. Poll rebtcd some of his experience with transients tran-sients who were union men, in proof of his claim about their being poor workmen. Most of the resident carpenters car-penters are good workmen, but as a rule the transients who are the agitators agi-tators are the shysters. A carnenler, a member of the union, when his attention was called to the remark of tho walking delegate dele-gate that only cometcnt men were admitted to the union, replied, "Oh, yes, some of them are competent compe-tent for some things, but my experience ex-perience is that It is walking and talking rather tliau working. Ojt of the list of members I can pick " that I know, who, if compared (o another 5 that I cau select, would stand poor chances as two-thirds two-thirds hands, yet they get full wages. I would like to have them graded according to the work they honestly do for an employer, em-ployer, but 1 don't know how that can be reached under the present system." . Being .T-kcd as to lib view of the present situation he gave it as his opinion that an amicable settlement settle-ment would bo reached with all the firms who would piy the wages asked, and would not discriminate against union men because of tlicir membcrsbiri. |
