Tho vessel on which Mr. Slovenian Slo-venian was a passenger caught Arc In the cabin. Tho sailors seized uon the moveable articles that had become ignited and hastened to pitch Ut em overboard. Mrs. Stevenson, who was standing on deck watching Uie progreu of the fire and preparing to leave tho vessel when necessary, saw two of the crew dragging from below a large burning box, and prepared to hurl it Into theses. Recognizing in an Instant the box as belonging to her husband, Mrs. Stevenson spraug forward with a cry of dismay, seized Uie nearest man by the arm and begged him to drop it He did so and after being deluged with water, Uie box was saved. 1 1 contained ail of Stevenson's unpublished manuscripts, manu-scripts, Uie result of many months' hard work, among them Leing a story he had written by order for a prominent magazine and for which lie is to receive1 JtOOO, as well as a great portion of Uie history of Samoa. |
