At about ten minutes past four yesterday afternoon a deplorable casualty ocarred on First last Street, near the Social HalL A sewer trench was being dug there on a plan dii;ccJ lo save expense. Th trench would be dug from the surface to the necessary -depth, a distance of about eight feet, then a tunnel would be driven about eight feet, connecting with another open section of the trench. Martin Ekker was at work In the tunnel, when a small cavo occurred in it. He turned and leaped Into the open trench behind him, ani as he dij bo Its wall cams down upon him, covering him to a depth of about Ave feet. Death must have ensued in a few moment. ltichanl Maloney, a pipe lyer, was In the trench, and Immediately behind Ekter, when the flrtt cave occurred. He succeeded In lasting through the open trench In which fckkerwas caught, and entered the tunnel which led into tho next piece of open trench. He was a native of Germany, but came to Utah in chlldhoou and for many years lived In Rash Valley, Tcocle County. He hid recently returned from Montana, where he had been engaged en-gaged in herding fchecp. He was thrifty and luauUrlous and had saved sav-ed sboul$2IM of his earning. His mother was rendered frantic by the Intelligence of his sudden death, and a physician was called in to attend her. Todav, however, she Is more calm. |
