i 1 J Cynicism Vanquished T JN I N THE stress and the strain of Christmas f shopping many of us are tre given to cynicism w We Ve complain of the work involved in doing j for others Christmas is a burden someone will ii say Someone else pessimistically declares det de de- t clares that th if it has been commercialized to the it point of distress For those whose pockett pocket- pocket i t books are smaller than their hearts the days f preceding Christmas are depressing I 1 At this season of the year each and everyone everyone everyone every every every- one of us would like to be able to display in 1 f the full measure tangible and substantial appreciation appreciation ap- ap p for the friendships we enjoy We all ll sigh high for that financial comfort which would v permit us to go about spending our money in reckless abandon without entailing sacrifice to ourselves urs In these wistful moments few of us pause to reflect that Christmas s would lose i of its joy if the giving didn't hurt 4 F While we deprecate the fact that people themselves at at Christmas time spending spend spend- ing i money they can ill afford we nevertheless e bound t to admit tl that it is this spirit which V strengthens i our cur Ur faith in humanity The little old ld lady who toils with her knitting needles in ink k v loving service to a f friend may not comp compete te by lY financial standards but she gives gives' infinitely more than those who have given only what wha they h could afford rr There of course is 15 reason in all things thrift must ever b bj considered a a virtue ut even so we cannot loudly condemn those thos 1 Nj t give in friendly l a t little more r J i 1 they ought in justice to themselves Theof The Thc of of- this giving givin comes when it falls b t unappreciative individuals 1 One e of the saddest commentaries in life it the he individual belittling a gift by reason of its Hs is lack of financial worth failing to measure the the service of love involved in the token Christmas is not a matter of dollars and cents and for those who measure it on n that basis I alone It should be instantly and forever bani ban- ban i d. d Christmas is here rand and passing The Thc str s and the strain of shopping days are fori for- for i gotten otten We Ve have enjoyed a day of brightly bright bright- i ly ness ess and cheer rand and nd can return to our labors r with a renewed faith in humanity knowing know- know i ing g that a people who are extravagant in the f service of love cannot suffer for the sins of improvements improvements Yesterday we wc might have f consigned Christmas to extinction but today W ve e are strong in the thc faith for we know that we love and are arc loved and that fundamentally is pledged to those ideals which in in- Aspired the first Christmas to r- r
