Wheeler here on Saturday night was liillrertly due to a resolution offered by him at the Grand Army convention at Petersburg Peters-burg la-t fpring, reflecting on the Confederate flag. Up to tbat time he was doing a good bueiueza and was very popular with the people of Norfolk. The resolution he oITered was In tlie thape of a petition to Ooncrrs to stop the manufacture of tlie Confederate flag, which Wheeler termed n "contem Uble rag." Ills actljn aroused the peopele here and aflected Wheeler's buslnn-s to such an extent that, after tome weeks, lie publicly denied being responsible respons-ible far the resolution. lie even went so faras to appear in a parade at the head of a detachment of Grand Army men at the time of a Confederate celebration. It was subsequently proven, however, how-ever, that he was the author of the resolution, and then the lecllng against him became Intensified. His business continued to go down and he sought relief in drink. To an over-indulgence, is attributed his death. Wheeler was an ex-Union soldier and a native of Xcw York. |
