Show Sports Here and There By Al Ablett There has been plenty happening happen-ing in the world of sports but I guess the biggest noise was caused by Elmer Layden resigning resign-ing at Notre Dame to become high commissioner of football. Elmer gave as his reason for his action: the future of his family-And family-And $20,000 a year can take care of a lot of future. He had been struggling along on about $12,000 a year at Notre Dame. His new job carries a five-year contract, and to a football coach five years now a days looks like a life time. Colleges this year have been turning their football coaches over ov-er faster than the man in Childs' window can turn over hot cakes. Arch Ward,, the Chicago sports writer, turned the commissioner's job down twice and it was reported re-ported that heTvas offered $25,000 a year for ten years- I guess he figured a sports'wrTler couldn't" expect to look forward ten years-Who years-Who will get Laydun's job at the South Bend school is the question. The guessing contest is on. Buck Shaw of Santa Clara, Eddie Anderson of Iowa, Jim Crowley of Fordham, you could go on and on naming great coaches coach-es that are alumni of Notre Dame. Whether these men are available or not is a consideration. One thing is certain: whoever takes the job will inherit plenty of material and also fall heir to as tough a schedule as any team in the country has to face. To Elmer Layden, in his new job, the best of luck, and to his successor at South Bend, plenty of the same. Basketball is still going strong in Bingham. The high school hasn't been doing so well, but under the circumstances I think as well as could be expected. ex-pected. The material is good, but there isn't enough of it. Hardest of all is their woeful inexperience. No one has ever said that in basketball experience experi-ence doesn't pay off, because it does and plenty. We have been able to see that in our own league- Tooele has a veteran team, Granite always has one or two seniors to build around, as does Jordan, and about 100 other candidates can-didates to choose from. Davis is one of the largest high schools in the state, so they always have plenty to choose from. Grantsville and Cyprus are about on a par with Bingham. Bingham has always done fairly well in their encounters with Uopa no --(? T tiro r i ihat Bingham used to win this league every year, or be mighty close to the top, but Bingham entered only basketball competition. So before we expect too much of our boys or the coach, let's sit down and take everything into consideration. consid-eration. And don't sell Bingham short-They short-They will make it plenty tough for the leaders before this season sea-son is over. They play Jordan tonight and if the boys play the way they have been told to play, it will be a ball game from the opening whistle to the closing gun. One great coach was asked what he thought was essential for a good team and replied: "80 Eer cent material; 19 per cent reaks of the game and 1 per cent strategy". The interviewer said "one per cent isn't giving the coach much of a break." He was answered, "You take the strategy, I'll take the material". No strategy can't win if the player, doesn't come through. Ask Joe McCarthy. But the best example ex-ample is Clark Shaughnessy. For five years at Chicago he couldn't win, but at Stanford he couldn't lose. He was just as good a coach at Chicago as he was at Stanford-The Stanford-The answer is material. Say, who got me started on this anyway? But good luck, Sonny Allsop, go get 'em. Gemmell club has been going on its winning way, taking Magna. Mini Cafe and Helper in stride. They play the Negro Ghosts Thursday night and the (Continued on page five) |
