Show By j ! - DR. SOPHIA BRUNSON . t REDUCING THE OVERWEIGHT In our last article, we stated! that in weight reduction the number num-ber of calories ingested daily would have to be reduced. For example, if the diet had contained 2,000 or 2,500 calories a day, the amount should be reduced to 1,300, which would require the body to call upon the fat already stored, and burn it for fuel, to produce the necessary amount of energy. An overweight who sets out to reduce should weigh himself on the same scales at least once a week . to see what progress he is making. I Katherine Mitchell Thomas, direc-' tor of dietetics at the Michael Reese hospital, Chicago, says that the following is a typical diet for the seeker of slimness: "At eight in the morning take one large orange, 1 cup of coffee, 2 table-spoonsful table-spoonsful of cream. Ten a. m., one glass of skimmed milk; 12 a. m., one large orange, one cup clear broth; 2:30 p. m., one glass skimmed skim-med milk; 5 p. m., one large orange, or-ange, one cup of clear broth; 9 p. m., one glass of skimmed milk. Tea and coffee without cream and sugar may be taken if desired." The above will nourish the body sufficiently, but is only taken once a week. The rest of the time the diet is much" more liberal. Starchy foods should be eaten sparingly because they are energy and fat-producing. A surplus supply sup-ply of fat is already in the body waiting to be called upon and will be if the amount eaten is lessened. Hence, by cutting down sharply on sweets and starches the system not only ceases to store fat, but is compelled com-pelled to burn that which is already al-ready encumbering the body. A person of normal weight need not fear drinking large amounts of liquids, for the body needs plenty of fluids in order to carry on its functions. The body is made up of cells which swim in liquids as fish do in water. Lack of liquids tend to bring about an acid condition of the system, even the urine becomes very concentrated and acid. If carried car-ried too far, the individual becomes dehydrated and the condition approaches ap-proaches acidosis which is a dangerous dan-gerous state. Now the citrus fruits are acid but they produce an alkaline alka-line reaction in the system, so it is quite necessary to the maintenance mainten-ance of a balanced condition of the blood to take them while partially par-tially fasting when on a reducing diet. Fat stores water and keeps up the weight. When a horse jockey is preparing for a race he goes through a process which they call drying out, in other words he sharply reduces his liquids, which causes him to reduce more rapidly. When on a slimming diet, it is easy for the overweight to lose the first ten pounds rapidly by consuming con-suming his own fat but the process pro-cess slows down as time goes on. In fact, he may lose eight pounds the first month, six the second, but the third only one. To a large extent ex-tent his loss of fat depends upon the faithfulness with which he adheres ad-heres to his diet. It is necessary to count calories and limit one's self to the quality and quantity of food prescribed if one would reduce successfully. suc-cessfully. Food is the most important factor fac-tor in reducing, and at the same time maintaining and improving your health. You can by observing the rules that do both. |
