Show 'Forum ... AN OPEN LETTER: Duke, our springer spaniel, is dead, but in the minds and hearts of my two boys he will never die, but rather will go on living in spirit spir-it with them tomorrow as he did in body, until sometime Monday morning. At the hand of some man holding a .22, Duke was shot and killed. When my oldest boy came to me this afternoon with tears in his little eyes and his heart about to break and told me that someone some-one had shot his dog, I thought at first I wanted to know who did it, but since thinking it over I have changed my mind and I do not ever want to know who wielded the gun. To whomever it was, I do have this short message: If you have ever owned a dog you must feel a little bit the sorrow sor-row that you have brought to my boys and if you have never owned own-ed a dog, I would suggest that you never get one for I can assure as-sure you they become oe of the household and I would never want you to experience the feelings that my boys are now going through. To Duke, I want to say this: Although Al-though you may never know it, sometime ago we were offered a considerable sum if we would sell you, but from a material viewpoint view-point we could place no value on you. We thought back over the many times that you have served as a guardian and a faithful servant ser-vant to our boys and it was then we decided that you should always al-ways enjoy the best we could offer as our appreciation for taking care of Jerry and Neil. If dogs have a heaven I know you will enjoy one of the topmost places and I am sure that even now you are basking bask-ing in much better pastures than you have enjoyed while living with us. We still have a lot of your food left but then I suppose you will be much better fed where you are now than while you were with us. I suppose that even by now you may have another little master that you have taken up with but I'll bet you will never be able to think any more of him than you did Jerry and Neil. I'll have to quit now for it must be raining, for this paper is getting wet and I do so want it legible so that other dog lovers can read this little tribute to you. GRANT S. THORN. |
