Show RED DEVILS TO OPEN FIRE AT LEHI FRIDAY Game Time Set For S:80; Red Devils, Alumni Battle To A Scoreless Tie The Springville high school Red Devils will open their 1942 grid season at Lehi Friday, October 9, on the Pioneers' field at 3:30 p. m. Getting a late start this year because be-cause of the labor crisis, the Red Devils had a tough break when their coach, Art Hughes, was taken tak-en to the hospital for an appendectomy, appen-dectomy, delaying their grid work for some time. With E. Reed "Lob" Collins, veteran athlete and a grid star himself, appointed to coach the Red Devils while Mr. Hughes is recovering, the locals have finally fin-ally got down to serious training and drilling for the coming contest. con-test. Coach Collins reports that the squad is a promising one and that by the time they get caught up on back practices they have lagged on, they should make a formidable for-midable eleven. Devils, Alumni Tie . . . The Red Devils held a fast and rugged Alumni eleven to a scoreless score-less tie here last Friday after both teams battled up and down the field the entire game. The Alumni squad had practically the last year's team on the field with but a few exceptions. Toting the ball for some outstanding yardage gains were last year's captain, "Givie" Gividen, Guy Bird, Junior Johnson, and Louis Maibcn. Others who gave the alumni team plenty of punch on the line were Whiting, Bringhurst, Carnesecca, McKenzie, Averett, R. Averett, Wing and Fry. The high school team, although somewhat lacking in experience in the blocking and ball-toting departments, de-partments, did show that, with a little more coaching and practice, they will make a tough outfit to stop. The first home game this year is scheduled to be played here October Oc-tober 23 against the Lincoln eleven. |
