Show SHS Tennis Stars Win First Place at Y invitational Meet Springville high school's tennis team walked off with the Class B honors at the BYU Invitational meet held at the 'Y' last Friday and Saturday. Captain Carl Nelson won the singles i championship by defeating Gordon Gor-don Smith of Payson 6-2, 6-2, in the semi-finals and easily winning over William Anderson of Manti 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. Doubles honors went to Doug Smoot and Phil Haymond. This duo won over Juel Rasmussen-Clair Rasmussen-Clair Cherry of Snow in the semifinals semi-finals 6-2, 6-3. They then defeated de-feated Ken McGarry and Orrick Sheets of Richfield 6-2, 6-3. Weight Wins . . . Glen (Zip) Weight tossed the discus out 143 feet 7 inches to take the only first place in the Y track and field meet for the Devils. His throw was better than either the class A record 'of the day or the Junior college throw. Other Springville, track men who placed in the meet included Bill Bird, fifth in the shot; Reid and Burroughs placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 220; Gerry Childs, third in the javelin. The Springville track and tennis teams will compete in the Region Three meets this Friday at the Y stadium providing the weather cooperates. From this meet, first place relay teams and the first three places in individual performances, per-formances, will qualify for the state finals in two weeks. |
