Show ABOVE THE HULLABALOO (Dissertation upon a famous lot scene, read before a meeting of the Dawdle Dell Shakespeare and Euchre Society.) yOUR SPEAKER heard "Romeo and Juliet" presented over the radio by the Sweet Bile Liver Extract Ex-tract Hour. Static was terrible, so I had to piece the plot together. The lifting of the curtain catches Romeo in the Capulet orchard. Maybe he has torn the seat of his trousers climbing the fence, because be-cause he swears, under his breath, "He jests at scars who never felt a wound." He aims to smooch some with Juliet. Juliet's pa, Mr. Capulet, can't abide the Montagues, Romeo's Ro-meo's folks, and he don't like young blades of that blood sneaking into his orchard to steal his peach and maybe a few apples too. He's mighty handy with buckshot and threatens to shoot the plot full of boles. Juliet is slow getting her lipstick ready to be smeared and appearing on the balcony, and Romeo kills time with them sour apples what else can account tor nis suiy groan- ' ing in the scene? Finally Juliet enters. en-ters. She does not see him at first, doubled up under a bench with love and cramps, so she hollers, "O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou, Romeo?" That's a cue for the announcer to say his piece about Sweet Bile. Then Romeo exclaims, "O, that I were a glove upon that hand, that I might touch that cheek!" He's heard this dish must be handled with kid gloves. They discuss the feud between their families. She thinks the Montagues Mon-tagues stink and suggests he change his name. "... a rose by any other name tvould smell as sweet." Her manner is direct. She refuses to waste time being coy and asks him what time tomorrow the wedding bells will ring. Juliet's nurse has heard all. Now the compact is sealed, she deems it good strategy to recall Juliet before be-fore Romeo's tummy ache subsides and he tries to use delaying tactics upon the marriage date. She pretends pre-tends it's time for Juliet's bedtimf glass of Sweet Bile. Juliet whispers., "Parting i such sweet sorrow thai I shall say good night till it be tomorrow," to-morrow," but she scampers indoori without taking time for even i goodbye kiss. |
