Show National Guardsmen Taking Special Training; Unit Invites 60 Recruits By Robert II. Bringhurst, Warrant Officer Cpl. Cpl. Wightman will return to Springville about the 9th of February after completing 12 weeks at the school learning the operation and maintenance of Diesel tractors and towed scrapers. scrap-ers. This type of training will be very beneficial both in the National Na-tional Guard and in civilian life. Jay E. Averett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Averett, has signed a three year enlistment in the Springville National guard unit, and has been assigned as a pioneer, pio-neer, pending specialization. After the completion of four months with the unit Jay will be advanced to Pvt. E-2 and given his choice as to what type of work he would like to specialize in. The Springville National Guard unit, Company A, 1457th Engineer "C" Bn., has been authorized to recruit approximately 60 more members. The present strength of the unit is 60, and an equal unm-ber unm-ber of members are desired to bring the unit up to the authorized strength. Any person between the ages of 17 and 35 are eligible for enlistment enlist-ment in the National Guard, and any person subject to military service ser-vice can be deferred if he signs up before he attains the age of 18 years. However, anyone so deferred de-ferred must maintain an attendance attend-ance of 90 of the regularly scheduled drills and must attend the summer encampment. Members of this unit can attend service schools throughout the United States upon application and the passing of tests designed for applicants of each of these courses and schools. These courses run from 5 weeks to 17 weeks, and any member attending these schools receives the same pay as members of the armed forces, besides be-sides travel pay to and from such a school, and per diem for the days traveling to and from such schools. Two officers, either 1st or 2nd Lieutenants are needed to complete com-plete the authorized strength of officers and warrant officers. Members of the National Guard are needed as badly now, and are as important as at any time in the past. A reserve of trained men is needed in case of total mobilization, mobili-zation, or as replacements for men now in Korea. In any case, the members of this unit will be called into Federal Service as a unit and will be given a period of training before individual replacements are taken from the unit, if such re- |
