Show UTAH'S TOPOGRAPHY The,inhabited areas of Utah are a chain of valleys that extend, in the main, from north to south. Each is hemmed in by ranges of mountains that loop and converge in a rhythmical pattern. The valleys val-leys are fertile and the mountains provide abundant water for irrigation irri-gation and culinary use. The Uin-tas, Uin-tas, reputed to be the only east-west east-west range in America, run eastward east-ward from Salt Lake Valley to the Colorado line. Elevations in the State range from about 2,000 to 13,498 feet above sea level. The largest body of fresh water is Utah Lake, which empties into Great Salt Lake through the Jordan River just as the Jordan of Palestine Pal-estine flows into a more historic Dead Sea. Eastern Utah is the drainage area of the Colorado River, which draws in the waters of the Green and the San Juan. Utah has vast desert areas, much of which is used for cattle and sheep grazing. |
