Gary Crandall was the big hero for the Red Devils in last Friday's game here against Spanish Fork. It was his last 7-second basket that pulled the game out of bedlam and gave the Devils a tingling 51-49 victory.. Gary, incidentally racked up 12 additional points for a fine showing. - The Don-Devil battle vas a tensely played, erratic contest which saw the sensational, the polished, the stupefied play all wrapped up in one game. Both clubs exhibited their bright and dull moments in the contest. The game started out with Canto, Can-to, for the Devils, getting a nice set-up followed by two foul pitches pitch-es by .Tuttle and a long shot by Crandall while Spanish Fork collected col-lected only one field goal. Canto made another basket and then Spanish Fork came to life and while SpringviUe was sinking into its duller moments of play, the Dons rang up eight straight counters coun-ters to take the lead 10-8. Calvin Thorpe came through with a nicely nice-ly executed set-up and then Crandall Cran-dall sank a beautiful long shot to give the Devils a 12-10 quarter lead. , . On the brighter . side for the Devils, their play in the first of the second . quarter looked more nearly up to pre-season par as they raced to a 10 point lead with baskets from Canto, Tuttle and Crandall. Their drive dwindled as they went into a slump with only a little over three minutes to go to the half, and managed to hold on to a five point margin, 29-24 at halftime. Spanish Fork came back strong at the beginning of the third quarter quar-ter and while the Devils were lagging lag-ging on their bankboard chores, they watched the Dons sweep into a 37-40 third quarter lead. The Devils came to life in the middle of the final canto and although the Dons carried the lead most of the way, the Garrett club did take over .with only a minute to go, and led 45-49 after Crandall made a set shot. Spanish garnered two field goals in a row to knot the game up and with fans and players play-ers alike -in a frenzy, Tuttle stepped step-ped to the foul line and missed two free throws. Spanish Fork muffed an opportunity to win the game on a stolen ball and then Springville's Thorpe missed a free throw. Crandall, in the midst of pandamonium, picked up the ball and banked in a side shot to give the Devils the victory. Top scoring for the Devils went to Crandall and Tuttle with 14 each, and Canto with 10. Canto played ta hustling ball game throughout the contest and his fast break in the first half contributed greatly toward the victory. Tut- tie, although somewhat weak on the backboards, played well. |
