Never , has there been such an ovation and public acclaim of the wonderful "Cinderella Kids" as there was exhibited following their 60-39 inspired victory over BY high Saturday in the fieldhouse at Salt Lake City. The 1952 state title is the first since 1923 for the Rf d Devils. Back in 1917 they also came up with the same hoonrs. Outstanding cheering by the two peppv cheerleaders, Marian Bird and Bonnie Ames and the spirited , playing of the pep band kept the large representative from Springville Spring-ville heard above all the crowd when the SHS cagers took the floor. Roval Welcome ... 'Upon returning home Sunday afternoon. Spring-ville citizenry met the kings of prep basketball at Orem and escorted them home j through the' kind assistance of j state highway patrolmen. Hun-1 dreds of cars lined up in double file between here and Orem. The victory procession came to a stop at the' high school gym where Ray Klauck acted as master of ceremonies cere-monies to an impromptu pro-gram honoring the team and the. coach, each of whom spoke briefly. Other speakers included Principal Paul K. Walker. Supt. Wallace W. Brockbank, Mayor Edward Clyde and Johnny Jensert, faculty member mem-ber attending the team at the tourney. tour-ney. They ail voiced praise for the fine accomplishments. Victory Assembly ... Monday the high school council planned the big victory assembly and Mayor Alma Jensen introduced j tho cheerleaders who in turn introduced in-troduced each team member, athletic ath-letic manager and the coach with a fitting cheer All wore a red and blue crown with champ on them. Following this rousing ovation of 1 team introductions, Captain Doug Smoot. on behalf of the team, expressed appreciation for the fine support and school spirit and for . the fine team and its winning spirit ! and cooperative play. His admira- j tion and congratulations to Coach Wilson, represented the entire team. Coach Wilson presented the beautiful state high school cage trophv to Mayor Alma Jensen who accepted it on behalf of the Springville Spring-ville high school student body. Following the trophy presentation, presenta-tion, Bill Johnson of the Deseret News presented their all-state metal met-al to John Gustin for his great nlay and record in the tournament. He also offered apologies for not placing Doug Smoot on the first all-state, selection, stating that he was the number four player on the first five until politics changed the first, team selection. In presenting, the award to Gustin. Johnson said that he. was "the player of .the tourney." He commended the entire en-tire team and paid a glowing tri-mite tri-mite to Coach Wilson. He stated about the Red Devils that they were tho "greatest clutch playing team ever seen in basketball tourney." tour-ney." June Wood sang and original song entitlde, "Our Very Own." accompanied ac-companied by Jane Harrison. Mayor May-or Floyd Harmer of Payson, who was a member of the 1923 state championship squad, spoke and paid tribute to the winning spirit of the Red Devils Sunt. Wallace Brockbank, Harold Christensen. representing the school board and the "down town coaches "club," J. F. Wingate and Principal Paul K. Walker all paid the team and the coach fitting tributes for their brilliant, record. Kent Hatfield and David Dalton gave a comic skit to conclude the program. The students stu-dents em'oved the rest of the afternoon af-ternoon dancing. Appreciation and thanks is expressed ex-pressed to the highway patrol and to the Springville Fire Department, Depart-ment, who led the students in a parade about town prior to the assembly. |
