Show SOLONS CLASH; APQLOGYMADE WASHINGTON, March 27 1P Accusations (if ignorance and demands for apologies almost brought Senators Kenneth D. Mc-Kcllar, Mc-Kcllar, D.. Term, and Henry F. Ashurst, D., Ariz., to the end of a long friendship Tuesday. They clashed in the senate over McKellar's insistence that many treasury alcohol tax agents be required to take new competitive examinations to hold their jobs. Ashurst termed McKellar's amendment, which was approved "wild and reckless." He said hif old friend "can only plead ignorance ignor-ance at the bar of the American people for offering that proposal.'' McKellar, . feeling senatorial courtesies had been violated, said Ashurst should apologize "If he's a gentleman." "I certainly apologize if anything any-thing I said could be interpreted as impugning the senator's motives", mo-tives", Ashurst replied. "However as to his being ignorant, I do not apologize." |
