Show POPPY DAY NEXT SATURDAY Poppies to be worn here on Poppy Pop-py day, May 29, were distributed to members of the Region auxiliary auxil-iary Tuesday evening. They were made by disabled veterans in the Salt Lake Veterans' hospital. The poppies ;are crepe paper replicas of the famous poppies of France and Flanders, that flourished flour-ished and bloomed amid the war's desolation. They are being arranged ar-ranged for city-wide distribution on Saturday, May 29, with Chairman Chair-man Ida Wignall in charge. . The flowers are made to represent repre-sent as closely as possible the little lit-tle red flowers that these men saw in the fields of France where so many of their comrades still j iie. Their significance comes I from the sacrifices of those thou- sands of brave young Americans who died in the country's service, on the battlefields of France. Making the poppies has provided provid-ed employment for many hundreds of disabled men through the winter win-ter and spring months. Disabled veterans receiving little or no compensation from the government govern-ment are the only ones employed in the poppy program. Preference Prefer-ence is given those with dependent depend-ent families. The work has proven prov-en especially helpful to those who could not possibly find or perform other employment. |
