Show Cripples Returning To Drill for Battle In 5. L. Saturday It was a happy, confident coach that greeted the Brigham Young U footba" squad early this afternoon in the Cougar stadium. Coach Eddie Kimball is confident confi-dent but not over confident. He has a light to be enthusiastic. Last night, for the first time in two i weeks, all of his regulars were in their togs. The only boy standing stand-ing on the sidelines was Manuel Pacheco who did most of the replacing re-placing for slipper Jack Christen-sen Christen-sen in the Wyoming contest. Pacheco was out with a sore leg but is expected to be in a suit tomorrow. Huberts Out Charlie Roberts came out last night, ready for some passing. He didn't look too steady on his feet and the coach kept him from doing do-ing unnecessary running. Roberts was all set for the biggest season of his brilliant athletic career when the jinx hit him in the opening open-ing Arizona game. It must be disheartening dis-heartening for him to sit on the sidelines and see his "touchdown twin" Chris headed for all-conference honors. It was Roberts, remember, who always started the games in Christensen's position. Waters Re? o ve red Merrill Waters, the Cougars' most promising candidate for all-conference all-conference honors at end, is fully recovered from a Denver ailment. He looked like his old self as he raced the ends snagging passes as the "Y" squad practiced on some new offensive plays. Back on the line were Chad Becks tead and Max Bateman. Beckstead was first string center before the Denver game. Bateman, who alternates with Gilbert at one of the guard positions, is fully over a cold which kept him out of most of the Wyoming tussle. The fullback problem, becomes more difficult as Brink and Dea-vitt Dea-vitt return to make tilings tough for Tom Kimball who was shifted from the line for last week's game. Brink Is Favored Brink looked especially good in practice last night and will no doubt play the bigger part of the time in Salt Lake. A hand injury has been hounding the "Y" player for ten days but it looks like things will be different Saturday. Coach Kimball concentrated on fundamentals today as his charges went into their second scrimmage in preparation for the Redskins. Assistant Floyd Millet took charge of the backfield while Eddie Ed-die Kimball had his linemen pushing push-ing him around on the dummy. Fundamentals are basically the points which win football games and the critics will have to admit the "Y" coaching department can put them over. Some scrimmaging is scheduled for tomorrow. Drills on pass defense de-fense is expected to be stressed inasmuch in-asmuch as that is the department the Cougars were weak in last Saturday. Nothing very heavy can be in store tor the Cougar men Thursday as the "Y" coach wishes to taper off his drilling so the boys will be rested for Saturday. Satur-day. f ( |
