Show Cougars Polish Up Offense For Montana Series Hoping to rebound back into the thick of the Western division basketball race at the expense of Montana State Friday and Saturday, Sat-urday, the Cougars of B. Y. U. were back on the hardwoods today, to-day, polishing their attack for the Bozeman series. Optimism pervades the "Y" camp once again, after a seige of illness had rendered the squad in poor shape for the Utah games j last week. It is probably that every man on the team will be in tip-top shape by Friday. The starting lineup against Montana is a question mark at present. Captain Marlow Turpin will be at one forward post, but Stan Watts and LaVar Kump are waging a merry fight for the other. Rapid improvement of Watts may win the starting assignment as-signment for him. Earl Giles, center, is expected to carry the brunt of B. Y. XL's scoring activities against Montana, Mon-tana, just as he did when the Bobcats invaded Provo earlier in the season. Which two of Coach Kimball's three guards, Charley Roberts, Guss Black, and Bob Detmers, will start is still problematical. The combination which starts against Montana will depend largely upon the conditions at game-time, who starts for Montana, Mon-tana, and the showings made by the Cougars in practice this week. Clever Strategy Coaches Kimball and Dixon pulled a neat ' bit of strategy against Utah Saturday night, which may work in the Montana games. Expecting Utah to start Childs, 6 foot 7 inch center, and knowing how dangerous Childs was under Utah's basket, the "Y" 1 coaches made adjustments in the , Cougar lineup which completely befuddled the lanky Ute. Charley Roberts was sent in at guard, opposite Childs, with the instructions instruc-tions to play as though he were a forward. Roberts ran Childs ragged, and kept the big Ute away from the basket, apparently apparent-ly the only place he was effective. effec-tive. Besides keeping Childs at bay, Roberts took an active part in B. Y. U.'s scoring. Another "Y" strategem was to have Captain Marlow Turpin, who was opposing Onan Mecham, Utah's tall backboard guard, play a semi-defensive game, thus pulling pull-ing Mecham away from the "Y" basket where he was such a menace men-ace to Cougar scorers the previous pre-vious evening. |
