Show Gene Tunney Becomes Papa i NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (U.R) A son was born today to Mrs. James , Joseph Tunney at Sloan's hospital, medical center. Tunney, the former heavyweight boxing champion, told the United Press: "I am certainly mighty happy. The boy undoubtedly will be the next heavyweight champion." Mrs. Tunney is the former Polly Lauder of Greenwich, Conn. The child was born at 9 a. m. Dr. Benjamin Watson ' attended. Both Mrs. Tunney and the child wore in excellent condition. Tunney and Miss Lauder were married in Rome on October 3, 1928. Theirs had been a romance almost of fiction. Tunney had seen and had met the beautiful and vivacious Mary Josephine .Lauder, socially prominent and an heiress. Their courtship was carried on quietly while Gene became the champion heavyweiight of the day. After he had won the championship champion-ship from Jack Dempsey, Tunney defended it once against Dempsey, then against Tom Heeney, the Australian, Aus-tralian, and retired from the ring. He was wealthy and he and his wife decided on travel and the pursuit of study. They have spent the years since their marriage traveling in Europe and other parts of the world. |
