Show A Ri(j Game Fable Once upon a time, two California Boys resolved to bo-come bo-come Big Game Hunters. The wild Rabbits were destroying their Father's beds of Spinach and, also, even the vines which grew the Delicious Strawberries, very Choice Eating in that Period. So, the Boys armed themselves with Bows and Arrows and borrowed their Uncles' boots and Powder Horn and set forth to wipe out the great Pest; also, Rabbit is good to Eat and hte Whole Town was aroused by Expectancy of much Fresh Meat. Now, one of the Boys took the name of Nimrod, from the Bible, and the other took the name Roosevelt, from a mighty work called "African Game Trails"; and, they set forth to greatly Punish the Rabbits. And behold! they did soon strike Tracks, very plain, very numerous and leading in one Direction, as Tracks are accustomed to do. Very cautious-' cautious-' ly and noiselessly did Nimrod and Roosevelt follow this' Spoor. They often paused to listen for noise made by the Game, creeping forward from Rush to Bush and otherwise avoiding Alarms. And, presently, they saw that the Spoor led into a quite large Cave. Clearly, the Pestiferous Rabbits' doom was sealed. Grasping Grasp-ing their Bows firmly ami drawing their Arrows to their heads Nimrod and Roosevelt crept forward into the Shadows of the Unknown Cavern. Ha! a big black Form moves. Two fierce Eyes throw sparks and there can be heard the Snapping of Cruel Jaws. Verily, it is no Rabbit but a large, powerful Bear! Now Nimrod and Roosevelt were not expecting any Bear. They knew that a Bear is no Rabbit in a fight. They were not out Exterminating Bear. In fact, they did not Want any Bear Had it been Rabbits, they would have done much ' Fierce Slaughter; but, Bear was very dangerous. And so, Nimrod and Roosevelt Hit the ground about twice, m their Race back to Town, where they safely arrived. Of course, there is a Moral to this California idyl, Fable, or whatever you call it. . in When going into a Place for Game, be sure that the Game isn't too Big for you. This interesting Fable is recalled by the Action of the Authorities in the Notorious Julian hunt, wherein the Tracks may be those of Rabbits but the Game appears too almighty . Kig and Powerful. |
