Show senatorial contest the salt lake tribune refers to the enquirers endorsement of judge hendersons senatorial candidacy on the ground that we believe at least one non mormon should be sent to congress from utah and the tribune says our position may and perhaps does indicate the line of the principal attack to be made in the supposed interest of the chinch against moses thatcher the enquirer was simply speaking its opinion and was not outlining to its knowledge any church policy we believe as we said before that it would be but fair that one non mor mon should be one of the representatives of the new state at washington and we think that most people will agree with us in the fairness of that proposition judge henderson is a clean man as far as his private record is concerned con corned and in public life he has never been a mormon eater it is true he came here with a mission to help put down the practice of polygamy which was then the policy of the government to do but in carrying out that policy he never invented any segregation or otherwise sought unjustly to persecute the people he merely performed his sworn duty and when the manifesto was issued he with judge zano and others was ready to stop and accept the cormons mormons as acting in good faith while the tribune and powers clique were still crying out there was a nig ger in the woodpile while the people of utah are willing that a non mormon should represent them in the halls of congress the cormons mormons want a voice in the selection of that representative so far as this paper is concerned we propose to work for the election of such a senator as will not fight the dominant church and thus keep the church and state bugaboo constantly before the people of the country to our way of thinking the election of moses thatcher on liis antichurch anti church platform or judge powers with his antichurch anti church record would result in a renewal of the old bitterness in the state the church would quite likely resent the antichurch anti church policy of either of those men then there would be the devil to pay in the election of a man like judge henderson who is not mix ed up in any church or antichurch anti church policy peace prevail it is peace that we want even if we have to fight for it |
