Show protection and free trade n we have just received the reports of commerce and navigation corrected up to January 1897 on page is an interesting table of comparisons of our exports and imports from 1835 to an examination of thie report shows that under protection the exports of this country have nearly always been greater than the imports while during periods of low tariff the imports are nearly always greater anan the exports during the seven years from 1835 to 1842 under a low tariff the excess of our imports over our our exports was while during the the four year from 1842 to 1846 under protection the excess of our export over imports was the low tariff established in 1846 continued until 1857 when it was made still lower until 1862 at which ame the morrell tariff was adopted that period of 16 years our imports were in excess of our exports from 1862 to 1873 a period of 11 years daring great civil war ccok place creating an enormous demand for both home and foreign manufactured products the excess of our imports over 0 ur export was 1086 but from 1873 to 1896 the excess of our exports over imports has beanS daring the whole periods from 1835 to 1896 conr excess of exports has amounted to of this amount 2358 has been received since 1893 during same period from 1835 to 1896 bur total excess of imports has been of this sum there has been only since daring the period from 1835 to 1873 mostly under low tariffs and the civil livar our imports were 1598 in excess of our exports while from 1873 to 1896 mostly under protection our exports have been 2289 in excess of our imports these facts ought to be sufficient ent to show the people of this country how much more we prosper under protection than under free trade |
