Show LOCAL MAN GIVES VIEWS I - ON VALUE OF GOOD MUSIC It is it lie purpose! of this article! 'to bring to your attention the tin-, usual advantages ' of the study of music in stabilizing and ' expanding expand-ing the minds and characters of children, of young men and women, and at the same time, its value in holding their interest to the home. "Every child . in our country should learn how to sing, and how to play upon at least one musical instrument. Among these the piano is perhaps the most practical for jnusical cultural purposes. Nothing should crowd out the opiortunity , for self-expression which can come to those who can play the piano with some degree of mastery." The late Dr. Charles E. Elliot, ; former president of Harvard University., Uni-versity., was a most enthusiastic protagonist for music, claiming that "music is the best mind train-1 er of them all." We could site hundreds hun-dreds of instances of very famous men and women who have been equally enthusiastic over the value of musical training. Music, when properly si tidied under un-der a trained teacher : I Intensifies the powers of con centration. 2 Promotes accuracy. ' : 3 Coordinates Mind, t muscles and nerves. ! ' ,,: 4 Develops the memory. 5 Quickens' mental activity, (i Encourages self-expression. 7 Develops poise. 8 Enriches the taste. U Brings greater joy to life. In addition to these all-important life factors, music is of enormous value, of real importance in providing pro-viding a wholesome mental and spiritual means of keeping one's leisure time profitably employed. Thousands of enlightened American Ameri-can parents have come to look upon music study for their children not merely as an entertaining accomplishment, accom-plishment, not merely as a matter of accomplishment, not merely as a matter of family pride giving the children the distinction of culture and refinement; but as an unsurpassed unsur-passed opportunity to afford them a training menial, artistic and spiritual, which will develop qualifies quali-fies enabling them to compote, with the real leaders of the future.
