Show welcome lo 10 ahe farmers provo is proud of being the place selected for holding the first state farmers institute with time these institutes are designed to become important factors in the development and perfection of our agricultural life and the institute now being held will become historical utah is by nature a great farming state conr rich valleys and incessant mountain streams make the avocation of the farmer so safe that it will always be a popular investment and with the development of mining in the mountains near by farming fruit growing and dairying will always be profitable but bad farming can be profitable fi there are many now pursuing the occupation in a thoughtless manner not realizing that to bring about good results is required the government is spending yearly millions of dollars on experiments for the benefit of the farming communities and too often the knowledge thus made access sible is ignored by the farming classes why is it we believe it largely due to jack of organization and public discussion farmers institutes will stimulate inquiry and the public discussion of interesting questions will lead to private investigation when once that stage is reached the enam of farm life will wear away boys from the farm who go to colleges and higher schools of learning will find that information there gained can be profitably applied at home and that neighbors are interested in the higher or scientific phase of farm life the drudgery of the farm the hard manual labor required on it will not seem half so tedious when the labor is intelligently telli gently supplied the village farm life of utah so wisely inaugurated by pioneers admits of the highest perfection of farmers organizations an evening can here be spent without much discomfiture in the discussion scientific problems elsewhere farmers are isolated on their respective homesteads and it is considerable of a chore for them to gather still isolated as they are in many states they keep up thorough organizations izat ions buth for commercial advantages and for educational purposes we urge on utah farmers more unity of action let them organize and above all let them avail themselves of the free institutes which the state government has provided anything worth doing is worth doing well is an old maxim and the agricultural pursuits on which men depend for a livelihood is worthy of the highest consideration on the part of those engaging in it |
