Show UTAH'S HISTORY BEGANffl 1776 Story of State Opened "While Declaration of Independence Independ-ence Signed. SALT LAKE, March 31. Dr. W. J. Snow, professor of history at the B. Y. I", at Provo. gave a most interesting in-teresting paper before the UtaL. Historical society last night at the Hotel Utah. Mr. Snow told the story of the exploration and settlement of the great basin between the days of Padre Kscalante in 177G and the coming of the Mormon pioneers in 1847. The part that international rivalries rival-ries played in both exploration and trade was stressed in vivid tales of the activities of the Hudson Bay company, the Northwest Trading company and me American trapper. The intimate personal touch was, given through incidents in the lives of Peter Skeeu Ogden, W. R. Ash-Icy, Ash-Icy, Jim Bridger, Andrew Henry, Thomas Fitzpatriek and Jedediah Smith. Mr. Snow has made nn especial study of the great basin, and from the wealth of material of nitriguc and adventure he wove an excellent background for the real history of Li ah as a state. Following Mr. Show's paper, there was an entertaining enter-taining discussion from the floor on the different phases of the subject. sub-ject.
