Show SPRINGVILLE'S NATIONAL ART EXHIBIT OPEN Salt Lake Mayor Principal Speaker Opening Day's Program. Tbe Springville National Art Exhibit Ex-hibit opened at the high school auditorium audi-torium Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with a most excellent program. pro-gram. Principal K. L. Done was Fn charge. The principal speaker was Mayor C. Clarence Nesleu of Salt Lake City. Mr. Xeslcn said during his remarks: re-marks: "The word will go out if it has not already gone out that Springville is the art center o the west. I commend the people of Springville for this thing for it is worth while. The benefits that come from contact with this gallery will be felt all up and down this state. I hope the time will come when there will be Art Day in Springville as there is now Peach Day in Brigham and Strawberry Day in Tleasant Grove, and that people will come from afar to enjoy the feast." He paid a tribute to the women of Springville and their organizations who have contributed con-tributed so much toward making the Springville art collection what it is today. Others who spoke were Dr. C. N. Jensen, state superintendent of public pub-lic instruction, and A. C. Nielson, superintendent of the Nebo school district. Musical features were rendered as follows : Vocal duet, Elmo Cof f-man f-man and Lola Boyer ; cello solo by Q. H. Childs, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Cornell Mendenhall : vocal solo, Mrs. Fay Loose Stiehl of Provo; steel guitar solo by Miss Austland of the B. Y. U. of Provo ; violin solo, Miss Florence Priday of Provo; vocal solo, Miss Melba Condie, and a chorus from the Springville high school. Visitors seated on the stand who were introduced but not given an opportunity to speak were all the board members of the Nebo school district, A. B. Wright of Salt Lake City, Dr. George Smart of Salt Lake City, Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction Matbewson of Salt Lake City, J. F. Wingate, chairman of the art committee, and Wayne Johnson, head of the art department. de-partment. The art collection on exhibition consists of 1GS pictures that have been sent in for display from states as follows ; California, 45 ; Oregon, 10; New York, 3; Kansas, 1; Nebraska, 2; Idaho, 3; Ohio, 2; Washington, C, and the rest from Utah. The display is open each day of the week to the public from 7 to 9 p. m. and on Sundays it is open all day. It will last until May 1. The unveiling of the prize picture will probably take place on Friday, April 25. |
