Show "fcJ .w . Afc MOHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN calls forth the images of tne new netherworld in Walt Disney's "Fantasia," a musical musi-cal adventure filmed in Multiplane Technicolor and now being be-ing shown at the Paramount Theatre, Provo, in SuperScope. Artists create illusion in show, 'Fantasia now at Paramount Walt Disney's artists, special effects animators, camera effects ef-fects specialists, cameramen, and technicians were called upon to create so many unheard-of things for "Fantasia," the studio's radical departure in full-length cartoon enter- plummet toward the earth, until un-til they can at last see what it really looks like. Then, as they hurtle closer, they see that the earth planet is a seething mass of fiery volcanoes, volcan-oes, just as it must have been in the beginning of time. tamment, that some methods, used in the past, were com- pletely scrapped. It is now showing at the Paramount. For instance, not only do some of the backgrounds in "Fantasia" move in a different ' direction than the animated figures in the scene, but there ; is a veritable maze in many di- 'I rections. This, of course, called for an entirely different cam- 'I era technique than was ever ' empoyed before, even in some ! of the most intricate "Pinoc- ; ,chio" scenes. The use of the Disney multi- '', plane camera reached new ' heights in "Fantasia," with some scenes painted on 6 feet by 10 feet plate glass panels, and various unique photo- '' graphic aids employed in order ! to achieve some of the exciting '' effects .called by Walt and his ! immediate staff. For one se- ! quence, 20 levels of glass were '' photographed at one time. In ! addition, one entire sequence, 500 feet in length, had to be shot without a single scene 11 left out. This, of course, re- ! quired an entirely new camera ' technique. ! In another sequence of the picture, the audience has the ' illusion that it is being whirled '', through space, as if riding ' on a comet. With unbelievable '', speed, viewers hurtle thou- ' sands of millions of miles, , through indescribable light ' years, through the blazing light of other comets and ' heavenly bodies until, finally, ,1 they see the earth itself, a tiny J pinpoint of light below.
