Show liberty in utah once more we would impress upon the legislature the fact that abey by their vote will be making history in and out of utah men are watching and wondering whether utah is yet fres or not salt laface tribune that kind of rot has been repeated ia the salt lake tribune day after day during the senatorial contest and strange to say boma people who know of the absolute religious reli gous and political freedom enjoyed in utah who have been reared here and would trust the leaders of the people with life itself aro harping in the same strain as our salt lake contemporary what is the cause of it it is all because a man could not conform to the rules of a religious organization almost unanimously adopted by that organization and decided to a candidate for political office in opposition to those rules to endeavor to break them down the church resented that kind of a campaign and the clique that sought to use the functions of tho state to break down the rules of the church aro getting the worst of it so now they get up and cry out at the top of their voice Is there freedom m utah there is just as much freedom in this state within proper political channels as there is in any other state in ohp union but men must not think they can commence warfare on the church in utah and not meet with resistance the party that would insist on such an American un campaign as outlined by moses thatcher ought to be eternally doomed in any american community the record of shows it ever ready to stand up for the spirit of the state quoted by the tribune that the rights of conscience shall never be infringed and that all political power is inherent in th e people when the church publications licati ons last year were interfering with politics and favoring W J bryan for president the enquirer alone stood out in opposition we believed that was the church in a measure interfering with the state and this journal alone recorded its vigorous protest when moses thatcher opened his campaign on the American un platform before mentioned it was apparent that such a campaign was interfering with the rights of the church and the enquirer fought it anere must be no mixing of church and state in utah and the people are proving there will not be they are also learning what a consummate fraud the tribune is for they see it raises the old liberal cry whenever things do not come its way and remains as silent as a clam when it thinks the church is favorable to its policy |
