| Show new yorks historical celebration ILLINOIS it will seek to control the leg islai ure cominek YORK jan 6 special tha one hundredth anniversary of the commencement men cement of tho sessions of tha legislature in this city was appropriately observed today prior to january 1797 the legislature met alternately at poughkeepsie and albany but com ingon january ad of that year the capital city has been the perman ent meeting place of the lawmakers law makers of the empire state AB the proper anniversary fell on sunday and as today is the date appointed tor the es of the legislature the cee bention was timed accordingly tho city is gaily decorated and crowded with visitors thera was a a grand parade this mornice composed cf political and civic organizations ami which started from the foot of ate street and passed through the principal thoroughfares the formal exercises took place after dinner in harmanus bleecker hall into which ai audience of over thre e thousand people had packed yep the pro c edings were inaugurated with tha bingin of the anthem Es norton presided at the beginning or the exercises and then gave way to goy arnor frank S black the oration was delivered by chaun cay M depew and W H mcelroy read a poem commemorative of the ebent on the platform were seated a number of ex governors and ex lieu tenant members and es members of the legislature mayor strone ot tew york city and other high officials of the state the climax of the celebration will ba reached tonight when there will be s procession and grand display of fireworks and a brilliant tall at the tenth battalion la the fireworks display will be illus the three in which the legislature babbet for a century first will be seen the original capital of 1797 then the next one and finally the fredr ont magnificent structure |
