Fork Friday Buoyed by their victory over the BY high gridders last Sat-urday night at the Y stadium, the Springville Red Devils will travel to Spanish Fork Friday night for an unprecedented practice game. Kickoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. on the Don field. The two teams will meet in league play on Oct. 28 at Spanish Fork so Friday's game will be only a practice affair and help give the boys some further experience. The Devils have one more practice game, Cyprus here on Sept. 29, prior to league play. Devils 12 BY high 6 It was a thrilling finish that brought victory to Coach Ben-ny Killpack's eleven at the 'Y stadium Saturday. With only 41 seconds left in the game a series of running plays fea-turing Steve Strong, Ted Mur-ray and Buddy Gardner in the star roles, although the line men certainly did their shore also, sparked the victory drive. Murray made a beautiful run deep into Y territory, and hand-ed off to Gardner as he was tackled to put the ball within scoring distance. Strong car-ried to the two but the play was nullified. Murray faked a handoff and ripped through off center for the winning score. The attempted pass failed. Springville's first score came when they took the ball and marched for 60 yards, with a sensational pass from Murray to Gardner for the score. The Wildcats retaliated with a quick score and the rest of the game was played on fairly even terms. Life is like a game of ten-nis the player who serves well seldom loses. Highways of Happiness. Swim team sets fine record; Peggy Cox wins Springville's swim team wrapped up the season with a commendable showing with a total of three meets held and a record for two wins out of three. Their last two meets were run off this month. On Sept. 10 the team met the American Fork swimmers at Saratoga and decisively trounced them. In this meet Byron Lovell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lovell, won the outstanding boy swim-mer award for having chalked up the most points. Gloria Hansen took the girls' trophy. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Hansen. From this meet, the all-sta- rs of the two teams combined to form a county, swim team. This team competed in a meet last Sat. with the highly touted Tooele team, which has gar-nered most all of the swim trophies in the state swimming competition. The Springville swimmers showed up well and little Peggy Cox, da&ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Marv Cox, was the lone first place winner in the stiff competi-tion. Springville placed many sec-ond place winners against the Tooeleans who have been in state and national competition for several years. There were approximately 40 team mem-bers competing on the Spring-ville squad. The team plans to continue next year and hopes to in-crease both quantity and qual-ity in the swimming sport. Convalescing Effie Kelsey, Springville li-brarian, is convalescing at the Utah Valley Hospital from a recent heart attack. . --4 - ' J : i -- - 1 f v " fr - - i ? , v m . .Y . 3 i ' 1 i . . ! . - . v ... , , . , I Milo C.
