Family Commemorates Mother's Birthday Members of the Thorpe fam-ily held their annual party last Tuesday evening, commemorat-ing the birthday anniversary of their mother, the late Mrs. Levi Thorpe. The group gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Da-vis where they enjoyed a deli-cious six-o'clo- dinner follow-ed by visiting and the show-ing of pictures. They also plan-ned a special party for next year to celebrate the 100 an-niversary of their mother. Attending the party were: Mr. and Mrs. J. Alfred Thorpe, A. L. ' Holiday Cooking ' Theme at Club The Pari Passu club will dis-pense with the exchange of Christmas gifts among the members and take a gift to the patients at the Mental Hospital, it was decided at the meeting Thursday evening. Mrs. Rex Woolsey was hos-tess and she also presented the program on holiday enter-taining and the preparation of holiday foods and decorating cookies, candy and other items. The president, Mrs. Ray Lof-gra- n was in charge of the meeting at which Mrs. Louise Springer read the club collect. Refreshments were served at the conclusion to 14 members and Mrs. Dee Adams was a special guest. Club Hears Talks On Foreign Lands Mrs. Sterling Price gave a most interesting review of the trip made by her and her hus-band to the Near East, the Middle and Far East coun-tries at the meeting of the Home Culture club Friday af-ternoon, at the home of Mrs. W. R. Eddington. In connection with her talk, Mrs. Price showed a number of interesting slides taken as they toured Japan, Hongkong, Vietnam, Thialand, India, the Holyland and other countries. Adding interest to the after-noon were the lovely souvenirs which she exhibited from the various countries showing the artistic ability and workman-ship of the various people. Mrs. Waldo Jackson, presi-dent, conducted the meeting and paid tribute to Mrs. C. E. Eggertsen. Mrs. A. M. Lyall read the club collect. A nicely arranged tray lun-cheon was served by the hos-tess at the close of the meet-ing. W. R. Les Petite Femmes Enjoy Evening Mrs. Pat Brinkerhoff was hostess to members of the Les Petite Femme club at the home of her mother one even-ing last week. A delicious hot luncheon was served early and later games were enjoyed, with prizes going to Marilyn Cran-da- ll and Teddy Anderson, the latter being a special guest. The next club meeting will be a Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Dean Warren. Talk on Cancer Given at Club "Hope for Tomorrow's Can-cer Victims," was the subject of a talk presented by Dr. Da-vid Rees of the Utah Valley Clinic, at Aureole Club meet-ing Tuesday evening. Mrs. A. C. Chader was hostess assisted by Mrs. Erling Roylance. Dr. Rees said that yearly ex-aminations and early detection of cancer was the real hope for victims. Cancer which can be reached and in its early stages, may be cured in more than one out of two cases, he said. He reported that people generally lacked in pigment in the skin and were more susceptivle to skin cancer; that negroes sel-dom had cancer of the skin. In connection with his talk, a film was shown entitled, "Time and Two Women." A short business meeting was conducted by President Dorothy Willis and Mrs. Ger-aldin- e Atkinson reported on the Legislative Council meeting. An interesting display of the art work done by Mrs. Chader was seen and the meeting clos-ed with refreshments. Announ-cement was also made of the next meeting December 1, at the home of Mrs. Evans Car-- lin with Mrs. Eldon Palfrey-ma- n There is to be a display of arts and crafts done by the members and also each mem-ber is asked to bring some-thing to the meeting to sell and be prepared to buy an ar-ticle to raise funds for the club. ... ""Hwt , Miss Pat Frandsen of this city whose marriage to Allan Har-m- er also of Springville will be an event of early December. Miss Pat Frandsen Sets Wedding Date With Allan Harmer Dec. 4 Lovely Miss Pat Frandsen has set her wedding date with Allan Harmer on December 4, the ceremony to take place in the Third-Nint- h Ward church. The ceremony will be followed by a wedding recep-tion the same evening at the church. The bride-ele- ct is attending a beauty school in Provo and the groom-to-b- e has attended Brigham Young Uni-versity. She is a daughter of Mrs. Don Hazel of Spring-ville and LaVern Frandsen of Provo. Allan's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Harmer of this city. The two young people are both graduates of the Spring-ville High School and LDS Seminary. They plan to make their home in Springville. Better Absence makes the heart grow fonder but presents bring better results. Ex-change. Mrs. Arthur Hatch has re-turned home from a two weeks visit in Tropic and St. George. She spent a week with a sister, Mrs. Blanch , Richards and other relatives in Tropic and then accompanied her son Far-re- ll Hatch to St. George for another week's visit with him and his wife and family. 'Master of Deceit1 Reviewed at Club Camilla Merrill reviewed the book, "Master of Deceipt," by J. Edgar Hoover, to reveal the clever tactics employed by the Communists to carry out their program, at the Jeune Mere meeting Wednesday evening. ' Mrs. Naomi Thorn was hos-tess and served lunch early to 20 club members. Mrs. Flor-ence Nielson read the club col-lect. Mrs. Marie Whiting, presi-dent, conducted a short busi-ness meeting in which it was decided to supply Christmas gifts to the State Hospital. She also reported on the boxes of clothing sent by the club to the hospital. Mrs. Mary Palfreyman re-ported on the Legislative Coun-cil meeting. Art books from General Federation were dis-tributed. A new member, Mrs. Vernon Arnoldous of Provo was wel-coe- d into the club. The next meeting was an-nounced to be in the form of a husbands party December 4, at the Social Center. Mrs. Arvin Dalton had Thanks-- j giving family dinner early in his honor inviting Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dalton as other guests. Marvin expects to leave next March for overseas duty. Marvin Dalton, Signalman Quartermaster Seaman, has returned to his naval base at San Diego, following a 30-da- y leave.
