| Show purify utah politics the best way to keep the mormon question out of utah politics is to put down such men as insist on bringing the church into the political contests there have been men in both parties in the past who gained prom inanc charging church interference whenever politics did not go their way and utah people rather than have a rumpus have quietly de aisted and let the have pretty much their own way The result has been that many have believed 1 it the most successful policy to pursue to place themselves in the category of being victims of church persecution and thus to secure promotion it is about time in our estimation that such politics cease utah is as free from church dicta tionda politics as any state in the union politicians may perhaps seek adf times travail to avail themselves of church influence in utah as they do in other states and may secure the support of prominent church men as major mckinley did in the last campaign but the church cannot be held responsible for such support the fact is that none can point to church coercion in utah politics every voter has been free to cast his ballot for whom be pleased in the majority of cases the people have been opposed in their vote to opinions held by prominent church leaders but the little coterie who have profited in the past by getting up and yelling church and state still think they can succeed along that line and they are with each other in asserting that they stand for political free doman utah and opposed to church dictation if anything is done to de feat thorn they at once attribute it to the church they probably expect their cry of wolf wolf will continue to frighten people bufa they may carry their game a little too far it would please us to see every candidate who makes himself a church issue defeated by a big majority it would teach such candidate in the future to play politics fairly and squarely and not raise issues in our state politics that have no place there if young utah permit the old liberal war cry to continue to frighten them there will always be men seeking political prominence in opposition to the church the better way to do is not to recognize candidates who make fc hatan issue and soon our politics in utah will be entirely devoid of the present obnoxious we commend to young utah jude hendersons senatorial campaign we believe they will appreciate a fight made on strictly political principles outside odthe church and tate cry |
