Then I looked again at the building so badly in need of a cleaning itself. The City Hall, located in the center of town. And I thought of something else . . . the weeds that are left to grow on the side streets even on some parts of Main street so high that at some intersections it is difficult to see an approaching car. I went home and as I entered enter-ed the door, my daughter handed me the Springville Herald. Her-ald. I opened the paper to read and my eyes caught the article entitled, "Springville Must Keep Its Pride" sent in by the Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. It almost made me laugh. The article talks about keeping keep-ing the slums out of Springville. Spring-ville. And what are the slums? The article says among other things that slums are buildings that are not kept in repair. In their .own words, sidewalks un-swept un-swept and paint peeling are the first signs of slums. Then j Early this morning I had occasion to be at the City Hall ! with my husband and while he ! took care of his business, I i took a good look at the City ! Hall Our City Hall. It's a I good old building, built so it J says on the old-fashioned fros- ! ted glass window above the j door in 1880. ' But the condi-1 condi-1 tion of the building is deplor- able. As I sat and looked I wondered won-dered what all the tourists who have stopped to enjoy the lovely green City Park thought when they looked up at the I dirty, time-worn structure with j its wood window and door j frames deteriorating for want I of a good scrubbing and a few I quarts of paint. I looked at the scaling paint on the pillars of the porch and s the faded bricks so badly in need of cleaning and painting I and I was almost ashamed of the little old fashioned single ! light globe hanging from a dirty cord from the ceiling of the. porch and the stone thresh-hold thresh-hold nearly worn through. Then I glanced at the fountain badly bad-ly in need of a little cleanser j and a strong arm to make it ! sparkling clean. : And I thought how, for some 30 odd years, Springville has been stressing a Clean-up Day. How the city has come to be Where is that slum area that must not invade Springville? It looks like the City Hall. Lets wake up Springville and see ourselves as others must see us.
