Show THRilliNG TIME IN A DARK GAVE MEMBERS OF EXPLORING PARTY ENCOUNTER STRANGE BEAST WHICH ATTACKS THEM LIKE PREHISTORIC MONSTER Emits Howl Like Enraged Bull Eyeless Eye-less Fish and Rivers with Opposite Currents Among Wonders at Mammoth Spring Ark Little Rock ArkA thrilling experience experi-ence In a dark cave of unknown dimensions di-mensions and origin which Is a natural curiosity in tho vicinity of Mammoth Spring Ark is being told by a party of pleasure seekers to lends at their homes in Mcndou and Ursa Ill Finding of eyeless fish and an encounter en-counter with a strange animal which roared like an enraged hull and which according to the description of tho men who saw it resembled one of the prehistoric monsters were among the Incidents < < of the subterranean visit In the party which ventured to ex ploro > the mysteries of the cave wore Mr and Mrs Albeit Eshom of Mcdon 111 II E Corey and wife of Ursa 111 Mrs C W Curtis of North Ver lint Ind and John Lynn a liveryman of Mammoth Spring On entering tho tunnel wo walked through it for about sfx hundred feet and found that it continued of tho sairto size as at the entrance and that It had several turnings so that aftor i the first 100 feet daylight was entirely shut out snld Mr E I horn in telling of his experience t Suddenly wo came to an abrupt culdesac of solid < < 1 rock The bottom was covered with soft mud two Inches In depth Ily the use of a bicycle lamp we discovered an opening In the rocky wall of the tunnel at the side and low down about ten feet high and as much in depth This orifice was filled with water as clear as crystal coming to within four feet of tho top of tho hole With Mr tioroy I decided to enter the second cavern A raft was con l l ml rte r IIn It Charges Toward Us structed from some twoinch planks which had been left near the entrance to the first tunnel by some former visitors vis-itors and on tills raft we two with camera gun and tho lamp crouched and were pushed through the opening In the rocky wall leaving the remainder re-mainder of the party with afire of sticks at the edge of the pool of water This second cavern was about the same size as the first one and to our surprise wo found the water which was about six feet deep had a considerable consid-erable current lending away from the opening through which we had entered en-tered the cavern We concluded to follow the left wall nnd after drifting with the current about 600 feet discovered dis-covered the cavern had come to an end the same as the other had done In the end at the floor was another orifice about six feet square into which tho water poured Mr Corey set up his camera to make a third flashlight picture after which wo intended to return to the outer cavern Ho had scarcely fired the flash when there was a tremendous tremen-dous splashing in tho water ahead followed by a roaring howl something like that of an enraged bull In that confined space it was deafening From the water then arose an animal which by the light of the lamp In our hands seemed to be of Immense size It was larger than a bull and had along a-long neck and the head of a horse without ears It charged toward us The Jaws were armed with long teeth I fired one barrel of my gun into the creatures face and as it hesitated I gave it the contents of the other barrel The animal continued its hollowing hol-lowing but thrashed around and headed for the opening In the wall It had a sort of flipper on each side like those of a seal or tho wings of a bat While we wero having our expert once with tho strange animals our wives had heard the shots and roars of the Injured animal One of them was prevented with difficulty from plunging Into the water whllo the other fainted Whether tho animal seen by us was ono of the prehistoric monsters some of which it Is asserted were seen In tho far north last summer Is a quzzlo to us |
