Show Y HEAVY DEFICIT FUR PAST YEAR t Report of Postmaster General Gen-eral Shows a Shortage of Fifteen Million Vast Sums Must bo Paid Each Year by I Government to Cover the Losses In the Department Over Which Cortelyou Presides Washington D Postmaster General Gen-eral Cortelyou recently completed and forwarded to tho secretary of tho treasury tho estimates for the postof flee department for tho fiscal year ending June JO 1007 They show a reduction of expenses wherever It is believed It will i not impair the service ser-vice but provision for development of postal facilities to meet tho growing grow-ing needs of all sections of the country coun-try The estimates for tho postal service at large the Held service aggregate 193000000 an Increase over last years appropriation of about 27000 000 This Increase represents tho normal growth of the service based upon what the postal authorities regard re-gard as tho most careful and conservative conser-vative estimates Each succeeding year sees a largo Increase in tho business busi-ness of tho department The principal Items In the Increase are the rural delivery de-livery service railway mall service compensation to postmasters and their clerks and compensation of letter carriers car-riers For tho maintenance of rural delivery deliv-ery service and Its proper extension over 29000000 will bo required This Is an increase of 3600000 over the appropriation for tho current year which In turn Is over 5000000 more than that of last year so that the present estimate Is 1400000 less than tho increase of the present over the preceding year Tho deficit for tho fiscal year endIng end-Ing Juno 30 1905 was 14572584 This amount tho difference between be-tween tho expenditures and tho revenues rev-enues of tho department It Is officially of-ficially announced may bo said to represent tho actual cost of tho postal I pos-tal service to the people If recent I calculations are as accurate as they I havo been frequently In tho past they afford good reason for believing that tho deficit for the year ending Juno 30 1906 will ho considerably less It Is an Interesting fact that the total revenue for the fiscal year 1905 exceeded ex-ceeded the total expenditures for tho fiscal year 1904 by nearly 500000 |
