The meeting last Monday night, called for the purpose of organizing a commercial club, was not as well attended by our citizens as it should have been. A commercial club Is an organization in which pretty much all citizens should take an Interest, either directly or Indirectly, as It is Intended to work for the good of the entire communil- -. It is an organization In which wt should all stand united In boosting for Spanish Fork and sup rounding settlements. It Is an organization Into which no politics, no cliques, no cussedness, no graft, no religion, or becoming a member for private gain, should be permitted to enter. But should work for the good of all; for Improving our surroundings, such as beautifying our city, building cement sidewalks, grading and graveling the streets, planting trees; keep Irrigating streams front flooding the sidewalks and streets, building and painting fences," etc., etc., take on new life, new pride, and let us start at It at once. There is not a place anywhere to which nature has been so kind as to the section of country which we live. We have plenty of good farming land, oceans of material with which to build roads, and It makes us blush with thame to see our streets, sluewalks, and county roads in the condition in which they now are. This can all be remedied if we'll only put our shoulder to the wheel and push the good cause along. The officers elected are as follows: President, Jas. A. Martell; vice president, Joe Wren; secretary and treasurer, Taylor Thurber; who, with the following, constitute the board of regents: Fred Dart, J. M. Creer, Oran A. Lewis, A. B. Rockhill and David T. Lewis. It was suggested by President Martell that we start out by giving a grand ball to be given in the near future. This was decided by a unanimous vote. Quarters have been secured upstairs In old Rockhill hotel, to which an entrance wlii be made front the alley, and club rooms will be fitted up In which to hold meetings. Success to the club. Mrs. E. Switzerland conies nearest to Utah in point of beauty and thousands of people visit there every season. The people of Europe are vastly Here in different from Americans. the seventh one with only Belgium, area, there are nearly eight times as many people as there are In Utah. The climate is wet and cold during w inter and this Bummer there has been very little warm weather. The chief industries are farming, coal mining and manufacturing. As you know, it Is noted for the manufacture of Brussels carpets and lace. Throughout the country are large coal mines and here at Seraing there are about a half dozen. Coal is about the same price as at home. In one Iron factory here are employed 12,000 men and In this factory were made the rails used In the construction of the San Pedro Here also are made the railroad. Browning guns. The worst thing I have noticed here is women and child labor. The women work at manual labor the same as men, nearly all work bring done by hand. Where we have one man and team they employ about 12 men. It Is a pleasure to travel on their roads. They are all made of crushed rock, pressed and cemented just like pavement. What Is done is done well. Every spot of land is cultivated. There at least eight different languages spoken here, 1. e.. three languages and the rest dialects. , Most people talk two or three and then they can travel an hour on the train and have need of an interpreter. They are trying to pass a law now that will establish one language, the "Flemish, as the official language. You will, perhaps, be Interested to know I am talking French pretty well now. It is a splendid language and I like it fine. Railroads here are owned by the government. They pay the expenses and receive the profit. Accident are unknown and trains always on time. f the Transportation Is about cost at home and freight rates lower. They have post parcel system here and In connection with the postoffice they maintain a postal savings bank the same as a number of our congresses have tried to pass. The stores have one price unless you are English or American. They can always tell an American by his shoes. Everybody looks at your shoes as you pass down the street. The people here are very far behind in many of their ways of doing things. For example, in many places they sprinkle their Btreets with hose.
