Show OFFCmS BATTlE WITH OESPRADO Four Men Killed by Negro and Ten Other Injured Before BlackMan Black-Man is Killed Occurrence In Oklahoma Leads to Belief Be-lief That Race War Is Imminent and Governor Orders Out the State Militia Okmulgoo Okla Five persons were killed and ton others wounded Sunday afternoon In a fight between Jim Deckard a negro desperado and local officers Thg disturbance began at the St Louis San Francisco railroad sta Ion when Jim Deckard engaged In a fight with an Indian boy Steve Gray eon and boat him into Insensibility with a rock Friends of Grayson no Jfled the police and when Policeman Clabor went to the station Deckard led to his house nearby barricaded himself In and when Klaber approached ap-proached Deckard shot and killed hIm Sheriff Robinson gathered a posse In a few minutes and hurried to the scene Part of this posse was made up of a group of negroes whom the BUG riff commissioned as deputies As the posse approached the house Deck ard opened fire with a rifle firing ae rapidly as ho could load his weapon Sheriff Robinson fell first Instantly filled Then the two Chapman brothers negro deputies wero slain Deckards house was surrounded by n Frenzied mob of aimed men Fire was set to a house just north of Deckards volleys wero poured into Deckards house and ho was shot down He was seen to roll over on the floor strike a match and set fie to his own house which was soon a roaring furnace in which his body was baked Deckard evidently had a largo quantity of ammunition stored In his house for many cartridges exploded while the house was burning Governor Haskell at Guthrie was notified of the battle and of the bad feeling betwen whites and negroes that had grown out of it and threatened threat-ened a race riot The governor at once orderd the militia company at Muskogee to prepare to go to Okmnl gee and a special train wits mado ready to carry the troops the gay srnor remaining at his office to keep In touch with the situation News of the preparation to send militia hero had a good effect on the disorderly element of both races and at 7 oclock Sunday night the crowd < 1lad dispersed and further trouble is nof expected j |
