Show gemi it is entirely appropriate for salt lake to have the semi centennial celebration eb for it was there the pioneers found an oasis in the desert where they could rest it was there they first pitched their tents permanently after a long weary march across the prairies and it was there the inspired leader brinham young drove the stake of the peoples great temple salt lake became the center from which the pioneers pushed their other valleys and formed other settlements they have midways looked to salt lake as the head ever since that time and in all appropriate public enterprise the capital can rest assured that the rest of the state will support it but salt lake is aggressive and the average salt laker would gladly see every public celebration at the capital in the very face of the big celebration planned for 1897 he capital this year got up a carnival to which all the state was supposed to come and local celebrations were discredited in every possible manner such avarice for such it was leave no pleasant with the country people there was a strong demand from the public for strict economy at the last session of the state come with greatly increase in ed public expenses and the people wanted the least possible expenditure of public money for this reason only five thousand dollars was appropriated toward tho semi centen nial celebration end a commission was appointed to arrange for a celebration commensurate with the means at their disposal about all members of the commission commiE sion are salt lake men and the first thing they do is to decide on a fifty thousand dollar celebration it is true that the impression is now given out that only ten thousand more will be asked of the legislature and the rest salt lake which the celebration will greatly benefit is supposed to raise but if not raised and our state commission as is usual has a big deficit who is to meet the bills we fear it will be in this case as it was with the worlds commis sion that body by of common consent was to have forty five thousand dollars to make a showing at ohi cago but it brought in bills amounting to nearer sixty five thousand dollars the state is not in any condition just now to favor extravagant celebrations brat ions and about the first thing the legislature ought to do alien it meets is to tell the centennial commission just what amount it can have for the celebration the appropriation might well be doubled in our estimation but we would not favor more than a ten thousand dollar exi pend iture for the celebration by the state we believe that is plenty con si dering liow hard it is to raise taxes these days if tho commission cannot get up a celebration on that amount let it go out of business |
