Show 1 I VAST SUM FOR PACIFIC COAST Secretary Taft Wants Appropriation of Five and a Half Million for Coast Artillery Service Increase In Coast Artillery Will Necer clfate the Expenditure of Enormous Sums by the Government In Providing Quarters For the Men Washington The annual report of secretary faft to bo submitted to congress at Its convening In December Decem-ber will contain estimates aggregating aggregat-ing > r 25920 for constiiictlon and other work In the coast artillery service ser-vice during tile fiscal year 1909 This construction work Is to provide lu part for shelter for the coast artillery troops authorized by the act of January Janu-ary 25 last for which It Is necessary to erect thirty company barracks six band barracks 178 set of officers quarters quar-ters and 218 sets of noncommissioned staff officers quarters By tho legislation legis-lation of tho last congress the coast artillery received an Increase of forty four companies with a corresponding number of officers In accordance with tho decision of Secretary Taft last November No-vember a concentration scheme Is booIng boo-ing worked out In the coast artillery service by which somo of tho seventy eight separate forts where modern artillery ar-tillery coast defenses are Installed or In progress of Installation are to bo completely manned and tho remainder placed In the hands of caretakers The posts at which work Is to bo done and for which appropriations will be asked include the following amounts asked for being given In round numbers Baker California 185000 Stevens Oregon 107000 Wlnfleld Scott California WS2000 and Ward Washington 334000 |
