Show rri Of v SWIMS 30 MILES TO ESCAPE DEATH REMABKABLE FEAT OF A HAWAIIAN HA-WAIIAN FISHERMAV IN WATER NEARLY 17 HOURS float Capsizes In Squall find His Three Companions Perish Is Nearly Driven Mad by Crabs During Awful Experience Honolulu H lEdwttrd Duvaii niche of Molokal 1 Is the hero of a most remarkable story of human courage and endurance and of a marvelous mar-velous escape from death The fact that ho was one of time team that represented rep-resented the national guard of Hawaii Ha-waii at the rifle shooting at Sea Girt N J last fall will perhaps add some Interest to the tain of his thrilling ex icrlouce Monday night May 28 Duvnucliello who Is a fisherman living at Iukoo on the southern coast of Molokai with three native liawailans as companions compan-ions left home In a whaleboat with i load of fish for Lahatna Maul about 12 miles away They arrived there safely sold their fIsh and about eight oclock started In a dead calm to row back A light breeze sprang up and they hoisted sail making the sheet fast A fatted squall capsized them before they could ease off the sheet The boat became waterlogged and be pan drifting out to sea They wore at the time a mllo or two from Kaana pall landing Maul They made a float with four oars and the mast and with this to help them two of tho natives at their own request started to swim ashore to get help After waiting their return for three hours In vain Duvauchelle and his remaining re-maining companion Dan Pawaa came to the conclusion that the two men had failed to reach shore and as tho whaleboat was drifting still farther farth-er out to sea they dpcldcd that they would themselves attempt to reach the shore by swimming They made afloat a-float of the boom and gaff and all that was left of the boats gear and started start-ed The current carried them In the direction of Naplll and they were able to gradually make their way toward the shore When within half a mile of It they discovered to their consternation conster-nation that the current was setting against them and that In spite of all their efforts they were drifting farther awaythis time In the direction of Molokai which seemed to them to be about ten miles distant They therefore there-fore made up their minds to swim toward to-ward the shore of that Island They seemed to be making considerable Headway and by sunset were as near is they could judge by the lino of oreakers on the reef four or five miles rom the shore Y 1111 r They had moonlight until nearly midnight when the moon set Hy this time Dan Pnwaa was becoming ox laustcd and could barely keep himself afloat Thereupon Duvauchello gave up the float to him entirely pJaclnK him on tho middle of It and ho himself swam without the assisting buoyancy of the float When about 500 yards from the shore of a little rocky Islet about a mile from the Molokal coast awaa was overcome with exhaustion and bidding Duvauchello good by dropped from the float sunk and nov er rose Duvauchelle succeeded about 111 hour later In reaching the rock and dragging himself wounded and bleeding beyond reach of till wmn eat r 1 t 1 1 tr A we t DUVAUCHELLE SWAM DESPERATELY DESPER-ATELY whore ho fell asleep from exhaustion not awakening until past noon tho next day Then ho swam to the Molokai Molo-kai shore a mllo away and made his way home When he started on his swim he had taken off his shirt as It was a hindrance In swimming but had kept his trousers on so that tho white skin of his legs would not attract the sharks which Infest these waters He was terribly tormented while In tho water by small crabs which fastened themselves to the skin of his chest and clawed and bit him almost to madness lie was In the water nearly 17 hours and swam a dicta ce of between be-tween 25 and 30 miles Duvauchello Is of French and Hawaiian Ha-waiian parentage 38 years old tall and powerfully built In many respects re-spects Duvuuclulles experience is without a parallel although there have been several somewhat similar occurrences in these waters the comparatively com-paratively narrow channels between the islands of Molokal Lanai and Maul tempting many to cross In whaleboats and other small craft |
