ur nr months ago the undersigner undersigned under signed and elder win E hawkins were sent bent into this thia county to open up a new field for missionary work at latrobe we found a small colony of saints childhood friends of on a who had bad removed from utah to this state for the purpose of getting employment this colo ruy which at airet only num bared seven members has boo bl absen en ic creased bv now naw arrivals from home till at present thare bare are twelve saints engaged in this vicinity in different occupations pat ions with the aid of the resident we began work immediately in latrobe Sa trobe which place we made our headquarters in the county on the aiss of may our first meeting was held and many for the first time heard the gospel pro claimed by an eldir of the tha church of jesus christ of latter latier day saints owing to ta the acquaintance of the people with the saints and aad the removal ot much prejudice through such acquaint ance and friendship a largo audience turned out to 10 bear the newly arrived elders the spirit of inspiration rested upon the speakers era and peace and order prevailed in the me meeting etiny curiosity which was the leading motive that had bad troughs brought out many ot of the people was hiving way to interest and many left with a desire planted in their heart to know more of our oar doctrines and with a word for the 11 mormons cormons Mor mons fram latrobe we worked gradually into the auf surrounding rounding towns where though we found some prejudice we met with respectful pud even kind bind treatment ind many people who were willing to give attentive car to our proclamation clam cla mation tiou of the of salvation though some conditions darin the busy season of the summer have been unfavorable to us ua we have held many meetings and have usually had bad fair audiences considering the vary scattered condition in which the people live here in the foothills foot hills bills the free use of schoolhouses union churches charchek or public halls balls has been generously tendered us ua bythe by the people we have been able to place within nearly every household where we have eone our tracts or books from which those interested may learn harn more con berning the gospel of christ as it hits has been restored to the earth although we have as yet not had bad the privilege of leading any into the fold we hope much gospel seed has found good soil and will ft iu the due time of the lord bain bring forth fruit which others who succeed us in the future may be the instruments in the hand band of the giver of the increase in reaping NL yearly early three months ago we wa organized a sinday sunday school in latrobe Sa trobe for the two fold purpose of exten extending dins to the saints the advantages of such an organization and bring in the chugren ch idren of 6 outsiders and teaching them the principles of the go gopel gopal pal As this had on ove several ral occasions before been tried by the different seen and failed certain failure and speedy downfall was predicted to our school by many of the prominent nt citizens of the town but f om the time of to the present the school has increased in size and inter interest sst till now it seems seem to be ba the best field in which we have hava to labor there we have an opportunity af implanting within minds minda and in athe the creeds of men the pure pare principled princ pled pes upon which their salvation depends at first the work of the school was wag hampered hampele d by the want of books but that impediment ere era this has baa been partially ally removed and we hope in the near future to fur for nish niah the school with everything in that line necessary for its ita successful opera I 1 tion lately we had a visit from elder henry S president of the mission and elder chiard Seo Eco wcroft his bis wife wib and children and with their help and that of the local talent we gave a sunday school benefit concert from which ft A e realized rea lizea a sufficient amount am at to fully equip the our concert on was waa thoroughly advertised advert isad and th the e bp hall 11 was crowded upon the occasion to b hear the mormons cormons Mor mons and their latrobe frie do da sinz sina many people came a distance of from five to twelve miles to attend interest in our school runs high since our concert it has icer increased eased near ly a third in ia size we wa have many pupils who come a distance ot of from three to five miles arma of which wal walk lk the entire desanca di dis sanca ance these pupils ere are of non Mormon parentage can the saints in zion present a case of greater interest if all the saints had such an interest nearly all their children might be meiners ol of a sabbath school our late lata visit from president tanner and company was much appreciated by elders eldera saints and our friends we held thre meetings and the above mentioned concert in latrobe all I 1 of which were well attended and
