| Show FOREIGN MISSIONS discussion at the 0 E convention INDIA MEED MORE HELP work in the dark continent armenia the help of all christians D 0 july IS 13 special the closing day of the great national convention of christian Endeavor era ern was made notable by an address from S 0 K B A of india in which he severely criticized criticised the action of the recent methodist conference in baltimore on the missionary question on this point he be said one of the great needs perhaps the greatest zu adest need of the indian church is indian christian leaders men of the soil who understanding the ambitions the alms aims and the natural tendencies of the people and entering into closest relationship with them will guide them to foster foater a natural christianity christ danity that will haye have respect to the graces gifts dud and talents of the tha land and to some extent take its form and shape from the peculiar characteristics of the indian mind and life and here I 1 feel it nay my duly daty now to raise ray my voice in protest against a resolution lately adopted by one ona of your boards for foreign missions this board has decided that it will not fiend as missionaries to any country natives of that country whatever their qualifications may be I 1 kaow that I 1 voice the feelings ot of the millions of my countrymen christians christiana wad aid hindus when I 1 say we regard this resolution re as uncharitable and unchristian this resolution will do more to estrange the natives and the missionaries than anything else I 1 can think of there are native baronets baranets baro nets native civilians native judges native collectors and natives riss rise to the highest steps of the official ladder but kiark this particular board has declared that no native shall ever be appointed to the rank of a missionary I 1 do not mean to deny that some natives might seek the appointment of 0 a missionary in order to better their temporal condition I 1 do not deny that still a large proportion of our religious leaders should bs be men from this country and from england but bat I 1 dare affirm that to some native of appointment as missionary will involve a greater self belt denial than to many men of this country who are sent bent out as missionaries on the general ni asio nary question the distinguished visitor also said young india is now seriously ji putting utting the question what shall we do with christ it is ia true that more mission aries labor in india than in ia any other foreign held field america has sent us ua more missionaries than other christian country the lame barns america will eyer ever be associated with the great philanthropic movements in my conn try and in behalf of of my countrymen I 1 extend our car heartiest greetings of these chete figures may not seem very large to you but when the fact is taken into consideration that long and wearisome journeys had to be taken afoot or in canoes through deadly man grove swamps in
