Show CLEVELAND GAR II ME Police Instructed to Maintain Main-tain Order; System Is Tied Up. CLEVELAND, July G. Street car traffic traf-fic was tied up here today for the second time in eight months, when approximately motormen and conductors of the I Cleveland Street Railway company went on strike today to enforce their demands for a wape increase of 12 cents an hour. Mayor Davis issued a statement saving: sav-ing: "If the company will keep its contract with the people and comply with the request re-quest of the city council to meet the demands de-mands of the employees instead of using the strike to force an increase in dividends divi-dends for investors, tho company would not need any protection. 1 "The police are instructed to maintain order and arrest any persons who destroy de-stroy any property of the street car company. com-pany. Several attempts were made to start cars, but in most cases they were unsuccessful, unsuc-cessful, owing to stoning or wire cutting by strike breakers. Several persons were injured by flying glass during the disorders, following which six strikers were arrested. Both sides remained firm in their demands de-mands today. Union officials have refused re-fused a 6 cents an hour increase, declaring declar-ing the men would remain on strike until granted the 12 cents. John J. Stanley, president of the company, com-pany, announced he would not grant the men their Increase unless the city council advanced the stockholders' dividends from G to 7 per cent yearly. |
