Show MILLIONS LOST Bf THEFT FREIGHT General Hunt of Car Looters Loot-ers to Be Instigated by Federal Government. By Universal Service. NEW, YORK, July 21. Upward of $38,-000,000 $38,-000,000 was lost last year through theft of freight in transit in the United States, it was announced today. Federal authorities determined to make freight matter as safe as the mails and have perfected a plan whereby shippers of freight will be secure against larceny while their property is in the hands of the government employees. Beginning tomorrow a systematic thief hunt will be instituted by the government, govern-ment, which will employ thousands of men in the work, in the vicinity of New York, St. Louis, Chicago, Memphis, Kansas Kan-sas City, Denver and San Francisco. The railroad administration determined upon this action upon receipt of reports of the magnitude of the freight thefts. I in one alone of which merchandise valued at $110,000 was stolen from a single car rear Kansas City. Guards detailed to watch valuable goods in transit have been murdered and looting loot-ing on a wholesale scale has passed beyond be-yond the point where local police authorities authori-ties in the various cities could cope with it. Instructions are to be issued to secret service operatives and to police and judges to show no mercy to those convicted con-victed of looting freight cars, but to see that the extreme penalties are exacted. |
