Show ..ijiLf BEMr TO I Will Extend Friendship and Hold No Thought of Vengeance. Marconi Lauds Feats of Army and Navy in the Last Year. ROME, Sunday, Nov. 3. Italy, now that Austria-Hungary is out of the war. is ready to extend to the peoples of thai, country the hand of friendship; declared ' Senator OugUelmo Marconi, the head of Hie Italian mission to the United States in 1917, to tho Associated Press today. The splendid offensive of the Italian army, he said, had brought about the iollasf of Austria, a n d G c rma n y will Jjflfsurrender. The Italian army and (Pavy in the campaign against the enemy liad performed deeds of which their coun- ' trymen might wellbe proud. "Austria's final collapse,"' said Senator Marconi, "was caused by the splendid offensive of our army U has brought definite victory within our reacjv We may still look for some littie trouble In bringing Germany to her senses, but with Austria definitely out of -the war and with Italy's veteran legions free to throw ' themselves against Germany, cither on the French front or by wounding her side through Bavaria,' we ought not to bo long in convincing the teutons of the futility . of further resistance. Proud of Fighters. "Italy may well be proud of her soldiers sol-diers and sailors. There Is perhaps no other instance in history of an army which suffered such a reverse as that pf Caporetto, retreating before the devastating devas-tating rush of the eriemy. and yet succeeding suc-ceeding in turning like a slag at bay and ' holding up that enemy behind a scant protection of mountains and rivers until help could arrive, and then within a year to throw themselves forward and force the enemy to surrender. "My countrymen may well he proud also of our navy. There is no other nation na-tion in this war which can point to such men as Rizzo, Pelligrini, -Rosetti and Paolicci, who not only had the sheer audacity merely to conceive such exploits ex-ploits as they performed, but had the nerve, courage, daring and skill to carry them out successfully. "We may calmly look to the future and fact) It and say: Brute Force Ends. "'At lastthc world, again is to know i he blessing of peace. Safeguarded by President Wilson's Immortal principles we will be able to settle down and recover from-the effects of this war without the I constant threat .of another conflagration . i hanging over our heads. At last the army of military and brute force Is at an end. An era of peace and good will among men has begun. ' "But in spite .of all this, we wiH not treat tbe Austrian population in a spirit of vengeance, for we do not consider them wholly responsible for the actions to which they had been instigated by their rulers. Iff the various peoples of Austria are ready to form their own governments gov-ernments according to the principles formulated for-mulated by President Wilson and to gbv- ern democratically, we, on our side, are ready to hold out our hand to them in friendship and to live with them as good and peaceful neighbors." |
