Show AFTER THE SLACKERS. The authorities at Montreal are enforcing en-forcing the Canadian draft act without with-out fear or favor, and, notwithstanding notwithstand-ing the fact that there were many anti-draft riots in tho province of Quebec Que-bec during the recent campaign, so far there has been no resistance to the execution of tho law. Of course, there are large numbers of slackers and dodgers, perhaps more in proportion to population than thero are in other countries, coun-tries, but these fellows are being rounded round-ed up wherever - the officers can lay hands on them. The Freneh Canadians do not appear before the world in a very enviable light, as tho province of Quebec has not furnished its first proportion pro-portion of soldiers. Probably the draft in the Dominion would not have been necessary if the French Canadians had shown patriotism enough to enlist. But as the law has been passed and the people have sustained it by re-electing Premier Borden by an overwhelming majority, there is no escape for the men who have heretofore refused to prove their title to citizenship. So far Canada has made a glorious record in the world war, but thousands of her best and bravest young men have gone down to death while thousands of skulkers remained at home. |
