Show gubernatorial party in rich county A CLEVELAND DEMOCRAT thought he could the administration mr cannons enquirer correspondence LAKE tows utah sept 17 1895 the gubernatorial party left woodruff this morning at 9 for randolph the county seat of rich county a distant of ten and two third miles after traveling for two hours we arrived took dinner and at 1 commenced our meeting by the quartette singing and being encored hon H M wells was the first er he made a short address complimenting the people of randolph upon their pleasant surroundings he gave some of his views upon the issues of the campaign and what in his opinion would be the best policy for the people of utah to pursue urging his hearers to stand by the policy of the founders of utah viz the fostering and maintaining of our home industries that employment might be given to the youth that were growing up in our communities if elected he would do all in his power to give all the people of utah a wise economical and businesslike business like administration the quartette again sang taking tha house by storm another encore was demanded and promptly given hon F J cannon then spoke to the crowded house stating that the issue in this campaign waa do the people of utah wish to indorse the policy of the present administration under the leadership of grover cleveland do they want it said on tho ath of november next that utah is in sympathy with the present goldbug bond issuing democracy he thought not and predicted hat hon H M wells clarence E alien and the rest of the republican ticket would be elected he also launched out upon the silver and tariff questions being frequently interrupted by unusual applause the famous quartette was again called for responded only to be recalled again the second time hon clarence E alien then addressed the meeting speaking of the tariff and silver questions also upon the broken pledges of the democracy of utah to the people they promised to hav they kept their promise he cited many other pledges given the people by the democracy that they have not redeemed contrasting this with the pledges made by republicans and faithfully fulfilled he also emoke of the boast of th democracy that it was the inherent right of the people to govern themselves and then quoted from the constitutions of democratic states showing how they loved to have the people govern themselves by the governors of these states appointing nearly all the local occurs instead of the people electing them he contrasted the cons titu eions of the different southern states with the republican constitution of utah another selection from the quartette and tho meeting adjourned immediately after the meeting at we started for lake town a distance of fifteen miles and a half from randolph A couple of miles distance we began to climb up the divide for five miles up up we went the wind blowing a gale arriving at the summit from which wo could look over all the county below we could also see our neighboring and wyoming at this point our driver informed ua we were 9 00 feet above tha sea level we began our descent to the valley below and down down we went for about feet until we arrived at lake town a beautiful little village close by bear laffe after supper we found the meeting house packed to overflowing hon H M wells C E alien and hon F J cannon spoke in the order named frank J cannon in his opening re if there was any democrat present who endorsed the administration of grover cleveland one over anxious democrat yelled out yea you do do you answered the little napoleon 1 I will ask you that question again after awhile said he then in scathing terms such as one seldom hears the policy of the administration was shown up and the bond deal of grover with the was portrayed in a most forceful manner hr cannon again asked do you endorse that but the poor fellow was silenced and could not even muster up courage enough to answer the quartette sang six selections during the evening and were warmly applauded by both republicans and democrats alike we leave by team in the early morning for hyrum in cache county a distance of forty five miles so far our trip haa been one triumphal march with nothing to mar the pleasure of the i party more anoa |
