Two of the crew wete boys of 16 and J7. both of ; whom survived the ordeal manfully. Immediately after the vessel dropped anchor off Meiggs wharf a complete supply sup-ply of provisions w-a-s sent out and the members of the orpw, who had been facing fac-ing s tar vp tion ai sea for t hrec months, devoured the food as rapidly as it could bo served. Poor sailing gear and contrary winds is said to 1 the cause of the long delay , in the voyage. Running time of the vessel on this trip is the longest in the history i of shipping on the Pacific. Leaving Sydrny last February and after being out several days, unusual weather conditions were encountered and for wetks practically no headway was made. Eventually, when a New Zealand port was reached, Mrs. A. Somer, wife of tho captain, cap-tain, disembarked on account of iliness. The next heard of the ship it was within 100 miles of Honolulu. Provisions were running short and a new supply was taken aboard at tho island port. These supplies were not sufficient for the trip to San Francisco and tho crew was forced to go on a diet of baked wheat bread and water. Upon their arrival here the members of the crew were turned over to physi-ciane physi-ciane for medical attention. |
